What versions of Microsoft Exchange Server are supported?
XWALLFilter supports all editions of Microsoft Exchange 2003 including Small Business Server 2003, Exchange 2007 including Small Business Server 2008 and Essential Business Server 2008 and Exchange 2010. We have a discounted bundle of XWall and XWALLFilter for Small Business Server 2003/2008 customers as well.
What are the system requirements for XWALLFilter?
1. For Microsoft Exchange 2003, your O/S may be one of: Windows 2000, Windows 2003, Windows 2003 R2, Small Business Server 2003, Small Business Server 2003 R2.
2. For Microsoft Exchange 2007, your O/S may be one of: Microsoft Windows 2003 x64, Microsoft Windows 2003 R2 x64 or Microsoft Windows 2008 x64, Microsoft Small Business Server 2008, Microsoft Essential Business Server 2008. The 32-Bit development/test versions of Exchange 2007 are NOT supported.
3. For Microsoft Exchange 2010, your O/S may be one of: Microsoft Windows 2008 x64, Microsoft Windows 2008 R2.
4. DataEnter XWall version 3.44 or higher is suggested. 3.38 or higher is required.
XWALLFilter does not appear to be working. Spam is going into inbox.
1. XWALLFilter inter-operates with several different layers of software on the Exchange server and therefore we issue compatibility updates from time to time.
Please make sure you are running the latest version of both XWall & XWALLFilter. If not, upgrade XWall & XWALLFilter to the current release available on our web site. Preferably, you should update XWALLFilter any time you:
a. Install a new service pack of Windows 2003/2008
b. Install a new service pack of Exchange 2003/2007/2010
c. Install a new hotfix or rollup for Exchange 2003/2007/2010
d. Install a new version of a native AntiVirus product for Exchange 2003/2007/2010
e. Install a new version of XWall.
2. Please follow the troubleshooting steps in the XWALLFilter Installation Guide. If you don't have a copy handy, see our Technical Support Site for a copy.
3. In the event this does not solve the problem, please open a support case at our Technical Support Site.
How do we move XWALLFilter to a new Exchange server?
1. Uninstall XWALLFilter from your old server or take the old server completely offline. Uninstalling XWALLFilter is a better idea if you may have to bring the old server back online in the future for whatever reason.
2. Download the current version of XWALLFilter from our Downloads Page and install it on your new server.
3. Re-Start XWall.
Is XWALLFilter compatible with older Outlook or third party email clients?
Yes. XWALLFilter operates upstream of clients on your Exchange server (before email is routed into a mailbox). Therefore, the specific email client used will not affect operation.
Where is the secure download server? We no longer get a username and password prompt?
Beginning August 8th, 2006, Customers no longer need to have a username and password to download software. Please go to Software Downloads with your product serial number.
XWALLFilter stopped working when I installed a new version of XXX
XWALLFilter inter-operates with several different layers of software on the Exchange server and therefore we issue updates for compatibility as needed.
1. Best practice is to upgrade XWALLFilter to the current release available on our web site (preferably) when you:
a. Install a new service pack of Windows 2003/2008
b. Install a new service pack of Exchange 2003/2007/2010
c. Install a new hotfix for Exchange 2003/2007/2010
d. Install a new version of a native AntiVirus product for Exchange 2003/2007/2010
e. Install a new version of XWall.
2. If you continue to have problems, please open a support request at our Technical Support Site.
XWALLFilter is not working for one or a small subset of mailboxes
Assuming you have already been through the troubleshooting section of the XWALLFilter Installation Guide, try these steps:
1. Make sure this user does not have any mailbox rules which would conflict. Try disabling all rules. Look under Tools->Rules in Outlook.
2. With the problem user logged-in and the current computer running Outlook 2003, close outlook, verify it's not running, then open a command prompt and run it with the command:
outlook.exe /ResetFolders
3. Logon to this users mailbox under Outlook 2003/2007 Web Access (OWA). Go into options and uncheck the checkbox to filter Junk E-Mail and select SAVE. Then check it again and select SAVE.
4. Assuming the above fails, create a brand new user and associated Exchange mailbox. Logon to the new mailbox using Outlook Web Access (OWA), then select OPTIONS, and enable Junk email support by checking the checkbox to filter junk e-mail. Send email to this new mailbox from an external email account which is not on your XWall whitelist with a SUBJECT line that is listed in XWall under Options->Blocking->Subject as being set to Mark subject and Move to Junk E-Mail folder. Confirm that the email is routed to the Junk E-Mail folder properly. If XWALLFilter works fine on this new mailbox but not on some existing mailboxes, you may have rule corruption caused by a migration or import of those mailboxes from PST files. Perform Microsoft knowledgebase article ID 924297 on an existing mailbox that is broken to confirm if you have this Exchange problem. After performing this knowledgebase article, toggle the filter junk e-mail option in Outlook Web Access (OWA) OFF and then ON again before testing with an external email account.
5. Assuming the above fails we have to assume this is an Exchange store issue since XWALLFilter does not differentiate by mailbox. At this point, a quick fix would be to export the safe senders list, export the mailbox to a .PST file, delete the mailbox. re-create it, then import the .PST file again and test. Once you know it's working, import the safe senders list and verify it's still working.
Does XWALLFilter work with Public Folders?
Microsoft Exchange only supports the Junk E-Mail folder for mailboxes. In regards to public folders, there are ways to work around that (by having email come to a mailbox and then forward that mailboxes INBOX email to the public folder using a server-side rule).
Where do I download the EnableJunkEmailFilter script mentioned in the troubleshooting section of the XWALLFilter Installation Guide?

Is XWALLFilter compatible with IMF?
Yes. As of version 2.0.7638.62, XWALLFilter is compatible in configurations which run IMF for additional spam filtering.
Every time XWall re-starts, I see the message "nn:nn XWALLFilter license message sent to xxxx@xxxx.xxx"
This is normal and part of XWALLFilter licensing. This message is read by XWALLFilter and will not show up in the Exchange mailbox.
Every time XWall re-starts, I see the message "nn:nn AddOn: XWALLFilter, valid until nnnn-nn-nn (...)
The XWall administration utility (mbadmin.exe) has the wording of this message incorrect. The text "valid until nnnn-nn-nn" should be "support valid until nnnn-nn-nn".
XWALLFilter licenses don't expire and are permanent, however your Support and Maintenance is free during the first year only. Support and Maintenance includes email and telephone technical support as well as product updates.
One exception to this is the trial version which does expire after a specific date.

The XWALLFilter license entered in XWall is not registering. The application event log on the server running XWALLFilter shows the product is not licensed.
1. Make sure your license is entered in the XWall administration utility under Help->Licenses->XWALLFilter and shows as valid.
2. XWall sends the XWALLFilter license to XWALLFilter as a special email. Please verify you have XWall version 3.42 or higher and verify that a VALID email address is entered under the field “LICENSE E-MAIL” in the XWall Admin utility under Help->Licenses->XWALLFilter. The e-mail address entered must be valid e-mail address for the Exchange Server on which XWALLFilter is running.
Please note that this email is read only by XWALLFilter and never actually appears in the mailbox.
Uninstall keeps saying: XWALLFilter is still loaded ...
If you have closed all MMC consoles and are still seeing the message "XWALLFilter is still loaded ..." during uninstall, please try temporarily stopping the "Windows Management Instrumentation" service. We have seen this fix this problem on some servers running monitoring utilities which use WMI.
